Overview

When the Prius Plug-In concept model was first revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2009, few realized the important role it would play in the future of hybrid cars.

It has offered users versatile solutions by putting in a pure electric or hybrid vehicle, the impeccable MPG, and all the technology expected from a Prius making it an amazing addition to the third-generation Prius lineup.

Now in its 10th year of production, this hybrid model still offers customers the flexibility to cruise around town using zero-emission battery power or hybrid mode for fuel-efficient road tripping.

Sales continue to grow, and with more than 20 million plug-in and hybrid electric vehicles sold globally, the all-new Prius Prime introduces an exciting player to Toyota's growing electric vehicle family.

The Exterior Design

Prius Prime's business is to allow it to have a personality identical to the new Prius hybrid model, but with a few extras—more performance, technology, and safety.

Overall, what Toyota is doing is building a vehicle that meets the practical requirements of its customers and a vehicle that targets their feelings and introduces a new lineup of sporty segments.

The body takes an elegant streamlined shape, which looks like a painting that contains many smart details such as the hidden rear door handles. Based on an updated version of the TNGA-C platform, the wedge-like Prius is roughly 2.0 inches shorter and 1.0 inches wider and longer than the previous model.

Most eye-catching are the thin LED headlights, which wouldn't look out of place on a sports car. The amazing thing is that there is a great similarity between the design of the headlights in Toyota, as well as the same design of the headlights in the latest Ferrari and Lamborghini cars.

Unlike the outgoing model, the new Prius Prime's body is essentially identical to that of the standard Prius. Toyota is differentiating the Prime by positioning it as something of a performance variant in the Prius range.

What distinguishes the all-new Prius Prime is the modern technology that was used on the roof, converting it into a solar roof. Solar panels recharge the battery when the Prius Prime is in park mode.

Prime's trims are SE, XSE and XSE Premium. Features are fairly similar across each model, The LE comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels with wheel covers, and The XLE includes 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Prius and Prius Prime share exterior colors which are as follows:

  • Wind Chill Pearl white
  • Cutting Edge
  • Guardian Grey
  • Black
  • Supersonic Red

The Interior Design

Toyota has equipped the all-new 2023 Toyota Prius Prime with tools that make driving more comfortable, thanks to the Toyota Audio Multimedia System with a 12.3-inch screen that was designed at Texas-based Connect Technologies.

Since the traditional Prius hybrid model is the most popular version, Toyota kept things nice with the LE, XLE and Limited trims.

While the published equipment list is a bit short on the LE trim, it’s thoughtful and includes a faux-leather steering wheel, an eight-inch infotainment system, and six USB-C ports.

Step up to the XLE trim and you’ll see a big jump in equipment. After all, XLE is Toyota-speak for Executive Luxury Edition, so expect such fancy features as wireless charging, heated seats, a digital rearview mirror, and a smart key.

A 12.3-inch touchscreen, a glass roof, and digital key functionality are optional on XLE trim, but they’re all standard on the Limited model.

Speaking of the top-dog Prius Prime, it also gets a JBL audio system, ventilated front seats, and a power tailgate, with advanced parking assistance, a panoramic camera system, heated rear seats, and a digital rearview mirror all on the options list.

The Engine and performance

Prius Prime is designed to deliver high-quality performance - with a plug-in hybrid system designed to improve fuel economy and driving performance, compared to the previous model. Work has also been done to improve the acceleration feel and controllability of the vehicle's speed, providing a driving feel and acceleration response unique to electric vehicles.

Under the hood is the fifth-generation hybrid powertrain coupled with a 2.0-liter engine and a newly developed lithium-ion battery, located under the rear seat. The result is a remarkable increase in the zero-emission electric range by over 50%, an increase of nearly 100 hp to 220 hp, and a 0-60 mph (0-96 km) acceleration of 6.6 seconds.

The Safety

Prius Prime will come standard with the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 3.0). This suite of active safety systems consists of the existing suite of features available in the previous generation Prius Prime and has enhanced some additional capabilities.

The suite of security features consists of the following:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure
  • Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar
  • Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic, High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist

Another new addition to Prius Prime’s safety features is Proactive Driving Assist. When system operating conditions are met, using the vehicle’s camera and radar, this system provides gentle braking into curves or gentle braking or steering to help support driving tasks such as distance control between a preceding vehicle, pedestrian or bicyclist.

The all-new Toyota Prius Prime will go on sale at an undisclosed time next year, with more details and pricing to be announced in the early part of 2023.
